Oldschool DayZ Hardcore Server / Re: "Beta". And now?

Still hoping for an oldschool comeback though. The more living through this hell, the merrier.
We waited five years for a promise not to be fulfilled. I see no reason in continuing to hope for the better.  It will not change. Yes, Namalsk will bring another peak of players, but after three weeks its over. I will only come back if a wonder happens and the game really works with all the features Eugen promised (both officially and on Facebook). Doubt this will happen.

Why not create a survey on the forum to know how many people would be interested to play on Oldschool server ?

For what reason? That 15 jobless people vote that I should work for free? This is no fuckin' communist "democracy" ;)

Seriously: to keep a 60 slot server filled up at prime time (ie. 6.00 pm - 1.00 am) you need a pool of approximately 3500 - 5000 active players (people who are regularily playing on Oldschool, maybe not every day, but always coming back). DayZ has now worldwide not even 6000 concurrent people playing on average. The party is over, no matter what the hardcore fanboys tell you at Reddit and the DayZ forums.

Bohemia Interactive is no reliable and trustworthy partner. They change stuff, interfaces without prior warning. For the average modder who is usually a computer science student with too much time this is no problem because the love to code. I am a high paid freelance IT professional -- for the time I develop stuff for DayZ that does not work because BI changed everything again with the next patch, I can earn several thousands of Euro. As long as I was on the hypetrain it was kind of a hobby. But frankly I lost most of my trust in the Devteam. And we were (and Aim still is) in a private FB-group with Eugen and Co since 2015. If I would get a dime for every promise Eugen made and then broke I would be rich.

The only way I could imagine doing Oldschool again would be if DayZ had the same maturity as Arma 3 (with editor and stuff). Doubt that this will *ever* happen.

There is a saying: "Don't ride a dead horse."  I fear DayZ is a dead horse. Just look at Steamstats and Twitch-Viewer-count...

Frankly, I don't know. I am so disappointed that I haven't played DayZ since Christmas.
But never say never.

Not gonna happen anytime soon. They did not manage to fix the admin logs, so there is no reasonable way to find hackers.  Yes, there are mods that can produce stats, however as they are scripted they affect server performance, so this also affects your gaming experience (slomo zombies, jumping over fences not working,...). One of the major assets of Oldschool was being a rather hackerfree server.  This is not possible at the moment.

Also I am not sure if the game pulls enough returning and new players that we can fill up a server for longer than 5 weeks.

As much as I'd love to run the server I have no trust in the current state of the game and I lost all trust in the devteam.

Not saying that things might change in 2019.

I have the same problem finding it hard to join 1pp servers ;). However setting up Oldschool server will not change the fact that the kids will rather stay in the queue of the "cool servers" the whole evening than join Oldschool. We had this problem in the past. People sort the player list by player count and then join the full servers...

Oldschool DayZ Hardcore Server / "Beta". And now?
« on: November 10, 2018, 10:58:28 AM »
This week BI announced that DayZ is beta now. What does this mean for Oldschool? Will there be a server and when?

In my opinion the current product is far from being called a beta. In software development beta means feature complete, bug fixing only. The current game is light years away from being feature complete, a lot of stuff is not working, there are not enough weapons (no real sniper weapons,...), stuff that already worked two years ago is not in the beta yet, the persistence is not working. So to be honest calling the game beta now is just a marketing move to trick people into thinking the game made a huge leap forward. IMO it didn't. But it was clear that something like this will happen, because earlier this year experimental branch became the new stable branch and stress test branch became the new experimental branch. So it is a continuation of the things we experienced the last years, we are just using other names for the same stuff. Frankly I expect a paid DLC in 2019 that brings in the missing features.

Like with every major update we see a lot of players coming back to try out the game, and when you look at steamcharts you will see that the peak number of concurrent players currently is as high as it was two years ago. Apparently a lot of people are coming back to try out the game again. Coming back to see that the game is still broken.

In the past we were always providing a server when there was an update. Only to see that there was a peak of players for five or six days and then having an empty server for months... This time, for the first time we won't do that. We will wait and see how the situation develops.

The reasons why we won't open a server at the moment:

- not enough features to keep players interested for a longer time
- no working persistance
- no killlogs, thus no way to find cheaters and hackers

Another reason is with the server files out the only option for us running a DayZ server is running it on a dedicated server on which we have full control (and not being dependend on a GSP like Fragnet anymore). However renting a dedicated server is a financial commitment for a longer period and it makes no sense to set the stuff up only to realize that in four or five weeks nobody is interested in the game anymore.

In the meantime I am playing around with the server files and perhaps there will be an Oldschool mod. However it all depends how the game itself develops over the next months.

Let us know what you think about the current situation.

Oldschool DayZ Hardcore Server / Oldschool 0.63 up and running!
« on: September 13, 2018, 06:45:27 AM »
добрый день, survivors!

Who would have imagined...

the Oldschool server is up and running on 0.63 experimental! At the moment the server might be up for just a short time. Bohemia revealed plans of making the server files available in the  next weeks. If this is really the case Oldschool will defiitely host their own server(s). So for the meantime we will run our server with Fragnet and will see if it is really possible to run our own servers. You know how it is with announcements from Bohemia... If it is possible though, we will set up the new servers and stop the Fragnet server. Also, if there are no people interested in playing we will also stop the server again.

At the moment all the stuff like kill stats, reserved slots etc is not working as it is not set up yet. I'm not sure if we will configure everything if the server is canceled again within a few weeks as it is a lot of work. On our own servers there will be a lot more possible I suppose.

"Dear Survivors,it's about time to talk about the content update that's coming to Stress Test branch very soon and will get rolled over to the Experimental servers after making sure everything works as intended. " Status Report 31. July 2018.

We are getting there...

That is a shame because I cancelled the service today. Finally the money run out. I do not believe anything they say anymore. As I do not want to pay another 400 bucks for another three monts of empty server it is over for the time being.

So far running Oldschool for at least the last one and a half years was the biggest money burning machine. There are better ways to spent 2500 Euros. I'm off the hypetrain.

If they ever manage to bring it to experimental or even stable I might reconsider starting the server again.

Please do not donate anymore, guys. Thank you.

*pulls the plug*

Server will go offline on August 28th 2018.  If a wonder happens and BI really releases something I might cancel the cancelation.
But first I go on holydays to Ukraine! Cya in three weeks.

Well I hope you can handle everything yourself or with Borsuk, Aim. Because I am leaving for Ukraine tomorrow and will be there for at least one week.

If the rumors are true that PU is planning to do a DayZ-mode in PUBG, then they are done anyway ;)

Just to make things clear: I really wanna DayZ succeed and I wanna Oldschool come back and grow. However I have no idea if it will happen. I also think that a working beta/0.63 is months away.  If it is possible to switch over to experimental we will do it. BUT it depends on donation money to fund the servers. If there is nobody funding the server I will shut down. In the last four years I paid almost two years of server fees on my own, the rest was donation money. This is more than 5000 Euros we spent on Oldschool since we started. The work for website, coding stuff, community management not included.

So lets hope the best for this community but also expect that it might come to an unexpected end. Totally depends on what Bohemia is delivering. The recent announcement that Hicks is leaving lets me fear the worst though.

Three months money to go. If the Bohemians release .63 within that time we can stay a little bit longer. If not, we will close down. Sorry.

Oldschool DayZ Hardcore Server / Re: Inaccessable tentbase?!
« on: September 29, 2017, 08:51:13 AM »
I understand the demand for basebuilding and that some people get creative. However it is an abuse of the collision system of the tents and therefore a glitch. It is always a difficult thing deciding the severity of a glitch -- but I use the following rule of thumb when deciding: DayZ is kinda simulation, so is a certain thing possible in the real world? Blocking ways with tents is to make things inaccessible would not be possible. At the same time I have no problems with the apple glitch because it could be considered shaking the trees so that apples fall down.
