Currently the DayZ Standalone is not in its best condition because 0.61 patch is not that much promising as many of us hoped for. Although Bohemia already announced in their status updates that 0.63 will be definitely the Beta it is still a long way to go at least until the end of the year. A lot of players left DayZ again to play other games like Player Unknown's Battlegrounds -- and who can't understand them for leaving?

Nevertheless, today I have a topic for you that might freak out some of you totally. Some of you who read this blog might remember of a blogpost from November 7th 2015 where I announced that we are planning statistics like Kills, Deaths and KDR for Oldschool Hardcore players. Oldschool Hardcore to switch their servers from DayZ Standalone to Unturned.

Starting with April 10th, Oldschool Hardcore will switch their servers from DayZ Standalone to the popular survival game Unturned. This move comes surprising as Oldschool Hardcore just celebrated their third birthday running DayZ Standalone servers in March 2017.


Unturned is a open sandbox survival video game currently in development by Smartly Dressed Games. The game places the player on the fictional Canadian Prince Edward Island where a mysteriouse plague has turned most of the population into violent zombies. Believe it or not, Oldschool DayZ Hardcore is three years in service this March. On March 15th, I ordered the first server with Fragnet. With a short interruption in late September 2014 this makes us one of the longest serving Hardcore servers worldwide. This is a good reason to become a little bit nostalgic, isn’t it? So, I gonna tell you about these three years of awesomeness.

Hicks and Blackout playing 0.60 on PAX, after 15 minutes of watching  I saw clipping buildings, a random chirped leg and a lootpile. Frames seem to be decent most of the time though. IMO the high FPS are gained due to fog. Goodbye to long range vision.  We could get excellent FPS with the current renderer if we reduce the max view distance to 600 m. This is what they do ATM...

Also it appears that bad sound quality and broken headsets are a precondition for all official videos of Bohemia Interactive.

xx Whitelisting and player numbers

 Many of you might know that currently the whitelist is turned off. The major reason for that is simply the reason that there are not enough regulars (ie. registered Oldschool players) to fill a server for a whole evening. To have a full server of 50/50 during primetime (ie. from 7.00 pm to 0.00 am) you need about 300-400 players logging in to the server. This might sound weird but it’s a fact that during the typical evening we have about that number of players on our server: people die and log out, squads get wiped and log off together, some players have to quit and the others do not want to risk their gear alone and join a public server,…

As much as we’d love to turn on the whitelist, as it provides extra security from hackers and cheaters, we simply do not get the numbers necessary to fill the server. At them moment it appears that more people are interested in hardcore again. Silo is extensively playing on our server, Mr. Blackout just started season 2 of his awesome hardcore series on youtube.  Almost since its beginning Oldschool was a hardcore server, no matter if it was a hype or not.  And Oldschool will be hardcore forever.
Howerever, in my opinion the term hardcore describes a whole philosophy about how a computer game (especially a survival game) should be. It is not just about first person perspective (first person perspective). This is one of the reasons I never liked when Bohemia Interactive changed the name from Hardcore to 1pp. In this article I want to give you my opinions about what hardcore should be. Please note that I am aware that DayZ is an Alpha. This is a discussion how I would see the game when it is finished – it’s not a criticism on how it is now.

xx The Top of Verified Player Applications 2015

Our whitelist procedure might be awkward but it keeps away hackers. Especially the application for the verified players group is often a challenge to some people. The tutorial explicitly states that you have to give a reason why you wanna play here. As we really approve every application manually this application text is important as it helps us decide if this is just a generic text or something you really have written up yourself. And this little text is exactly what keeps 99% of the baddies away. Nevertheless some people either do not read the tutorial or they do not care. But they get upset when they get a rejection. Here some examples of applications:

Lots of applications are just empty (rejected) or people apply for Bandits or Peacekeepers and wonder, why they are not on the whitelist (you have to apply for verified players). I am always baffled how people simply do not want to read a tutorial. There is even a short film explaining everything...

Who would have thought that 0.59 would really happen? Finally after four months Bohemia Interactive released the next patch this week and it brought a us a boost of players and new registrations. I really hope you are enjoying playing the DayZ again.

This brings me to the first topic I want to talk about today: server slots for players. As you might know, we have closed down the second server in November for good. The reason was that it never really was high pop. While everybody wanted to join server #1, the second server was empty most of the time. I discussed this in the past but as I already get requests to open a second server because it is so hard at the moment to get a slot on Oldschool DayZ Hardcore I have to tell you: its not gonna happen. Renting a second server is to expensive, especially if it is just used for gearing up after death on the main server. I think the money donated by the community could be invested better in server #1. I just wanted to give you an update about our plans for the nearer future.
The most important thing is that server #2 will be shut down for good. This is now the third time I will be shutting down the second server (1st time summer 2014, 2nd time after the 0.55 disaster) and this time I think it will stay shut down. The major reason for that is the low pop on server #2. We started the second server simply because #1 is always full during primetime. It was hard to get a free slot even for the admin team (the Battleeye reserved slot functionality is broken) that a second server was the logical thing to do. However, despite the fact of several people spamming to get a slot on #1, the second server was empty most of the time. It was used as a storage place for camps and to loot up without the risk of enemy encounters. The average population during the last few months was 2 players!
