Where are we heading?
posted November 07, 2015, 10:18:19 AM by n4ttl
I just wanted to give you an update about our plans for the nearer future.
The most important thing is that server #2 will be shut down for good. This is now the third time I will be shutting down the second server (1st time summer 2014, 2nd time after the 0.55 disaster) and this time I think it will stay shut down. The major reason for that is the low pop on server #2. We started the second server simply because #1 is always full during primetime. It was hard to get a free slot even for the admin team (the Battleeye reserved slot functionality is broken) that a second server was the logical thing to do. However, despite the fact of several people spamming to get a slot on #1, the second server was empty most of the time. It was used as a storage place for camps and to loot up without the risk of enemy encounters. The average population during the last few months was 2 players!

To be honest running the server is far too expensive just for few people getting easy looting up -- #2 costs 80 Euros a month. I think it will be invested better on server #1. I have already cancelled the plan for #2 and it will go offline on November 26th 2015. So make sure to move your stuff to #1 if you have stored anything on the second server. I am pretty sure that people will start complaining again as soon as the second server is gone, but this time I will not give in. There will be no second server during the alpha. This might change if the game goes beta and hosting your own standalone servers is possible.

With 0.59 patch on the shores we will concentrate on the remaining Oldschool server. As most of the current experimental servers are now 75 slot servers I am pretty sure upgrading servers to 75 slots will become available as soon as 0.59 hits stable, which should be before Christmas. We will upgrade to the maximum possible slots as soon as possible, so be prepared for more action on the server.

As soon as 0.59 will be propagated to stable branch we will turn on the whitelist again. You might have noticed that we deactivated the whitelist in the last month. This was merely a reaction to the low population on the servers. Deactivating the whitelist made it possible to have a more or less full server during prime time. So make sure to be whitelisted on Oldschool DayZ Hardcore if you wanna play on our server!

As some of you might know I programmed a tool called the Oldschool Commander, which is basically a logfile parser to provide information about player kills. It became a pretty popular tool for DayZ SA admins and it is used by most of the popular servers out there. The Oldschool Commander can calculate your total playtime, your longest time alive, your kills, your deaths, your kill/death-ratio and your kills per hour. It also shows all the players you killed and all the players that have killed you. Basically we use this information to find hackers and cheaters on the server and I have to say the protection it provides is quite awesome. This is one of the reasons we are basically hacker free.

So the next thing I announce is something I am really excited about!
Over the last few months several players asked me over and over again to publish a leader board on Oldschool DayZ Hardcore. In the past I always said no simply because we feared that this will lead to people camping the spawn points to increase their kill/death-ratio. But I thought again over the thing and I am very, very excited to announce that a leader board will come to Oldschool DayZ Hardcore.

In a first iteration, it will be basically a website with the top 100 players of the server which will be updated once a day. So it will show the top PVP-players  of the server. What is important is the fact that killing bambis will not give you a kill score. Bambi status will be 20 minutes on the server. During this time a kill will not be scored. On the contrary: if you continue to kill bambis you will be disqualified from the leader board as a known bambi killer. So if you like hanging around in Elektro or Cherno killing freshspawns you will never make it onto the leader board – it’s your decision.

On a second iteration it will also be possible to form squads and have a squad leader board. So you create your squad in your forum profile and all the stats of all players in your squad will be summed up and there will be a ranking for the best squads on the server. Eventually it will be possible to show the ranking information for all players in their forum profile. Also it will become important which faction you choose: survivor, peacekeeper/hero or bandit.

I hope to have the first iteration leader board ready by the end of the year. It is a lot of coding work because I have to decouple the logfile parser from the desktop application and make it ready to run on a Linux server. The second iteration will happen in Q1 2016.
Also I have a lot of awesome ideas for the future, especially after DayZ SA hits beta and becomes mod-able. But I won’t give away too much as I have no idea what will be possible and when it will be possible ;). But I can assure you that it will be pure awesomeness :D.

EDIT 2015/12/07: after discussion with BI staff we will have to postpone these features until Bohemia Interactive allows use of logfiles for other reasons other than hackers. So the current plans will be pushed into the future. We will see when BI changes its plans about the logfiles. Worst thing is that we have to wait until beta.

Oh, before I forget: I want to let you know that I will be away until December 2nd 2015 due to my medical situation – I am diabetic and will be at a recreation centre for three weeks. As this is on the countryside in the middle of nowhere I have no idea if I have proper internet access. I the meantime Aim-iliO and the rest of the Oldschool Administration Team will take care of the community.

Oh and something else, Maybe add different points for different guns (Pistols get more points then rifles, etc..) and also body hits sounds cool, But perhaps that uncodable or really really hard work, Just wanted to bring up the ideas.

We discussed how the list could be generated but still did not finish our thoughts.
Is someone who travels only in the woods, when he spots a player retreates, only takes shots at 300 - 500 meters and if he misses he disapears worth to be on top of the leaderboard?  By playing this way he could have a KD ratio of 3.0-5.0 and killing someone every 5-10 hours playtime. But does that mean that he is a good player?

Then we have the players who always move in squads in High risk zones. Who have the job in the squad for surpressing fire, and usualy bates shots and goes close quarters to position the enemy for the snipers. This guy maybe gets a kill every 1 1/2 hour but also dies a lot for the squad having a KD of 1.0 -2.0 . But is he a good player beeing worth to lead the scoreboard.

Whats with the players who are each day 5 - 10 hours on oldschool and always fighting. The have an average to low KD and an average Kills per hour, but because of their playtime a ton of kills. Are they the best players?

Its not that easy and there is nothing similar somewhere to just copy and paste which makes it a hard task to script. So don't expect to get something in a short period of time.

I am probably gonna sound like a kill joy here :-[ but I don't mean to be. Would a scoreboard not be infringing current T&Cs set out by Bohemia for running a server? As you would be using the logs for something other than cheat/hacking prevention? Just don't want you guys getting in trouble with your server host or Bohemia.  :P

@theZohan
You brought up a valid point. But I think eventually Bohemia will change this policy when DayZ moves into beta. The worst thing that could happen is that we cannot start the leader board at Christmas but at Easter ;)

I think you are 100% right :) It makes perfect sense to have something in development, ready for when it is allowed.

As we spoke earlier about using logs for WANTED (which i hope will be REVIVED)- when it comes to private shards, admins ARE ABLE TO USE LOGS TO ENFORCE SERVER RULES, remember? ;)

Well, this is a tricky question. Can you consider a K/D scoreboard "enforcing the server rules"? From what I have learned from working with BI staff is that they sometimes react not quite the way you expected...
